Entry 1: Edger Allan Poe, one of the worlds greatest short story writers and poets. "No one understands better than Poe that in fiction and in poetry both, its not what you say that counts, but what you make the reader feel." Poe was a master of putting a almost movie like image in your head, often times disturbing or suspenseful. His way of writing makes the reader feel as if his is witnessing the events of the story in real life in real time. Nothing is more thrilling from getting a feeling of true horror from just reading a book. "No one understood better than Poe that the deepest psychological truth may be rendered through phantasmagoria"." I am looking forward to reading more from Poe. Quotes by Edmund Wilson
Entry 2: The first story i chose to read is by far one of Poe's most recognizable and famous pieces, "The Tell-Tale Heart". This is the story of a man who is greatly disturbed with an old man he lives with. The old mans eye is what drive the man into insanity. He discribes the eye like that of a vulture, pale blue with a film over it. The man decides to take the life of the old man. In this story you hear a first person account of how he killed the old man. He thinks himself a genus as he recalls how he did the deed, and how he was caught. This story always sends a chill down my spine because Poe is so descriptive in how he tells the story and how he writes. Even the placement of commas to pause the sentence of the use of italics make this a very disturbing and graphic story. You can see it unfold like a movie in your mind. If anyone is interested in starting to read Poe, i strongly recommend "The Tell-Tale Heart" because it is one of his shorter stories and i think, one of his best. If you dont want to read it, Glen Beck has read it on his radio program and i must say with extra sound effects and great dramatisation this story is almost horrifying. Search for it on You Tube.
Entry 3: For my second story I chose "The Cask of Amontillado". This story is set is Italy where a man named Montresor becomes angry and jealous of his friend Fortunato and kills him. This story plays on peoples taphophobia (Fear of being buried alive) which is a common theme in Poe's writings. This is a more difficult read than "The Tale-Tell Heart" because of its vocabulary and it does have some non-english words in it as-well. It is however a good read.
