Entry one: September 2nd, 2011
  • The author I will be studying is Hattiet Beecher Stowe.
  • I will be reading Uncle Tom's Cabin.
  • It takes place before the Civil War, so I think that the main character is a slave and will try to escape

Entry two: September 2nd, 2011
  • I just finshed the Historical Facts and am on page 1.
  • The main character is Tom, who is a slave in Kentucky. (the exact city is not given.)
  • Tom might be sold, his owner was talking and was trying to convince his daughter, and possibly himself that he will get money off of Tom. However, knowing most slaves he will most likely try to escape from captivity.

Enrty three: September 10th
  • I have read to page 25 so far.
  • My favorite quote in the book is " O, George, we must have faith. Mistress says that when all things go wrong to us, we must believe that God is doing his very best."
  • The quote is said by a woman named Eliza, she is a slave, she says this next to her husband when he is outside working. I am not sure yet if she plays a role in the future or not.
  • This is a good quote because it suprised me that all the slaves were so faithful even after getting beaten and working forever, with little food.
  • The other important thing is that they have introduced Uncle Tom, who is a slave. Though he lives a tough life, he is married and lives in a small cabin with his owners.

Entry four: September 17th
  • I am on page 85
  • I am still not for sure if I am right yet. Uncle Tom has not even tried to escape for freedom.
  • Uncle Tom is obident, he serves his Southern owners well. Loyal, because he doesn't escape, and very compassionate. He goes out of his way to help his owners and neighbors.
  • I am ok with the book, there has not been very much going on. Its pretty slow still, but maybe it will get more into the slaves and their lives.
Entry five: October 2nd
Characters
  • Uncle Tom- He is a major character in the story. Tom is a very nice man, and very compassionate towards other slaves, such as himself. He is very religous and in the book carries his own bible with him. He learns that being a very religous man can lead to a very emotional struggle and can push a man on the edge. He is a Protagonist and is the main character in the story.
  • Aunt Choice- She is Tom's wife. She is just as nice and holy as Tom is. Though she loves Tom, she decides to escape for her freedom. While Tom decides to stay back, and get sold to other places. She is a protagonist.
  • George Harris- He is a slave at the same place where Uncle Tom is. He too decides to escape for freedom just like Aunt Choice. He escapes with his wife to go North. Only to find out freedom is the single most hardest thing to earn. He is a protagonist.
  • Tom Loker- After the fugtive slave law was passed. He was hired to be a slave hunter. Needless to say, he is ruthless and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. He learns the hard way that its not easy to hunt slaves, and how they react when they are found. He is an antagonist in the book.
Summary
  • During the mid 1800s, the biggest and most talked about topic, slavery. The story talks about Uncle Tom and his struggles through run away family members. Death to the ones close to him, being sold to many different people, and just trying to make it day by day working in the fields and in the houses. It also tells the story of his wife Aunt Choice and her kids flee into the North. As well as their friends Eliza and George Harris and their struggle to make it to freedom as well as some important choices and realizations about earning freedom, and what price it costs.
Rating
  • I give the book a 4 out of 5. It is a very good book, with important lessons, but the book is very long. Not only that, but it is very hard to read as well.

Wiki Reflection
  • I really enjoy using Wiki Spaces to blog our reading. It helps people to keep their thoughts organized, and we can back track on the work we have alreadly done. It also makes it easier to comment on peoples' own blog as well. It is a great tool that should still be used now, and in the future.
